How Much Does a Norwegian Fjord Cruise Cost?

A Nærøyfjord cruise is the two-hour sailing between Flåm and Gudvangen, and every option below includes it. The ticket on its own costs from $62. A guided day from Bergen that drives you there and back costs from $276, and the days that also ride the Flåm Railway cost from $399. What the prices mean

• A good all-round choice: the UNESCO Fjord Cruise, Flåm & Stegastein day from Bergen, from $322 with a light lunch.
• The ferry is the cheapest way onto the fjord. From $62 one way from Flåm or Gudvangen, but you get yourself there, and the bus back costs about $18 more.
• Lunch and coffee are the difference between the two cheaper Bergen days. The $280 Fjordrive bus tour and the $322 lunch day sail the same fjord and stop at the same Stegastein platform.
• The Flåm Railway adds about $100 to a guided day. The Viking Village day from Bergen costs from $421, against from $322 for the lunch day by road.
• Booking Norway in a Nutshell direct costs less than any guided railway day. Fjord Tours sells it from NOK 2,698 (about $286), with no guide.
• Every price here is per person, so four people on the lunch day pay $1,288 at the starting price. Only the private boats and cars are priced for the whole group.

The tours we'd compare first

For a day from Bergen, the lunch day is where we would start. It costs $42 more than the cheapest well-reviewed bus tour, and that buys a light lunch and an afternoon coffee on a twelve-hour day, so you are not hunting for food in Flåm with the coach waiting. It also has the longest review history of the Bergen days that go by road, rated 4.7 from more than 1,450 reviews. You get the two-hour cruise, the Stegastein platform above the Aurlandsfjord and the Tvindefossen waterfall, with an English-speaking guide on a new coach. Its listing excludes only gratuities and personal expenses. The tours below make more sense if you want a cheaper day, the Flåm Railway, or just the boat.

What does each option cost?

Each table lists one kind of trip, cheapest first. Every option is linked, with its rating and review count beside it. A short review history is a reason to read the reviews closely before booking, and a tour with none yet is listed but not recommended.

The ferry on its own, from Flåm or Gudvangen

Both classic sailings are the same Lustrabåtane ferry, so pick the direction that suits your route and take the Flåm start if the review history matters. For a different way onto the water, the guided Nærøyfjord kayaking day from Voss costs from $178 for six hours, transport to the fjord included. It is rated 4.5 from just 19 reviews.

Guided days from Bergen by road

The $280 bus tour and its winter twin come from the same operator at the same price; the date decides which one you book. The $276 Extrenorway day covers more ground for four dollars less, but at 4.9 from 20 reviews it has far less of a track record than the Fjordrive tour.

Guided days from Bergen with the Flåm Railway

Between $399 and $421 the railway days cost almost the same, so choose by what is added and by the review history. The Viking Village day from Guided Fjord Tours costs $22 more than Fjordrive's and has far more reviews. The Legendary Flåm Railway day is the one with lunch, and the Travenor small group is the one with Stegastein.

Private tours and boats

Private options are priced very differently, and most have only a handful of reviews. The private Nærøyfjord day with Stegastein and the Flåm Railway costs from $1,267 for a group of up to three, about $422 each when three of you share it, which is roughly what three seats on the Viking Village day cost. It is rated 5.0 from just three reviews, so it has very little track record. Guided Fjord Tours' private day with the cruise and the Flåm Railway is listed per person, from $1,267, and rated 4.7 from 39 reviews; its listing includes hotel pickup. On the water, the private Nærøyfjord yacht from Flåm with champagne costs from $11,615 for up to twelve people and has no reviews yet. Other private cars from Bergen exist, mostly with fewer than 30 reviews, and we have left them out.

What you get as you spend more

Mostly the journey from Bergen. The time on the fjord stays the same, and the extra money pays for transport, food and the railway.

Around $60 to $70: the boat. Two hours between Flåm and Gudvangen, one way, and you arrange getting to the quay and back. The classic cruise from Flåm is the one with the longest review history.

Around $275 to $360: a guided day from Bergen by road. A coach or minibus out and back, a live guide, the Stegastein platform and Tvindefossen, for eleven or twelve hours. At this price lunch is the main thing that varies, and the UNESCO Fjord Cruise day is the one that includes it.

Around $400 to $520: the Flåm Railway. The descent from Myrdal to the fjord, usually with the Bergen Railway and on some days the Viking Village. The Viking Village day has the strongest reviews in this range. Above $421 you are paying for a smaller group or a minibus as far as the train.

Per hour, the ferry is the dearest of the three: $62 over two hours is about $31 an hour, against about $25 an hour for the $280 bus tour over eleven. The bus tour spends the same two hours on the water, though, and much of the rest of its day is on the road.

What stays the same whatever you pay?

The fjord. Every listing that gives the sailing time says two hours, between Flåm and Gudvangen, through the same UNESCO-listed water. Paying more does not get you a longer cruise or a different view. It changes how you get to the quay, whether lunch is handled and whether the Flåm Railway is part of the day. The boats do differ. Lustrabåtane's classic ferry is an older vessel, while The Fjords runs electric boats with panoramic lounges, and several of the Bergen days book you onto those. Lustrabåtane's season runs from late April to mid-October; the electric boats sail all year.

What does it cost to do it yourself?

The official fares are lower than the resold ones, and on the Norway in a Nutshell route the gap is large.

On the ferry, booking direct saves about $4, but Lustrabåtane refunds only up to two days before departure, while the GetYourGuide ticket can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before. What costs extra?

• Getting back from Gudvangen. The ferry tickets are one way. Norway's Best sells the shuttle bus between Gudvangen and Flåm from NOK 170 (about $18).
• Food. Only the lunch day ($322), the Legendary Flåm Railway day ($411) and the Extrenorway picnic breakfast ($276) include any. Everything else excludes food, and most days stop in Flåm long enough to buy lunch. Our food guide covers where to eat.
• Stegastein from Flåm. If you arrive by ferry or train, the Stegastein bus from Flåm costs from $48 for 90 minutes, rated 4.4 from 152 reviews.
• Gratuities. Excluded on every guided day and never required.

What does it cost for two or four people?

Every shared tour here is priced per person, so the total scales with the group. At the starting price, two people pay $124 for the ferry and four pay $248. On the $280 bus tour two people pay $560 and four pay $1,120; on the $322 lunch day, $644 and $1,288; on the $421 Viking Village day, $842 and $1,684. These are adult starting prices for the cheapest date, so check child fares and your own date when you book. The one private day priced for the group ($1,267 for up to three) only matches the shared railway day when three of you go, and it has just three reviews.

Should you pay more?

Pay for the Flåm Railway if the train is part of why you came, because none of the road days include it. Pay the $42 for lunch if you would rather not queue for food in Flåm on a twelve-hour day. If you are already in Flåm or on the train, skip the Bergen tours and book the ferry, since you would be paying for a coach you do not need.
